As per the Notice, the Council is convening this public teleconference meeting to review, advise, and discuss the following items: 1) recommendations to the Secretary of Education concerning the funding and administration (including the development of regulations and administrative policies and practices) of programs; 2) The President’s Visit to Indian Country; 3) My Brother’s Keeper Initiative; 4) The Joint Committee on Indian Education; 5) White House Council on Native Americans Affairs (WHCNAA) and Interagency Working Group on Indian Education; 6) Native Language Working Group; 7) NACIE Vacancies Update; and 8) Response to the 2013-2014 Recommendations to the Secretary.

The National Advisory Council on Indian Education is authorized by Section 7141 of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act. The Council is established within the Department of Education to advise the Secretary of Education on the funding and administration (including the development of regulations, and administrative policies and practices) of any program over which the Secretary has jurisdiction and includes Indian children or adults as participants or programs that may benefit Indian children or adults, including any program established under Title VII, Part A of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act. The purpose of this meeting is to convene the Council to continue its responsibilities for developing recommendations to the Secretary of Education on the funding and administration (including the development of regulations, and administrative policies and practices) of any program over which the Secretary has jurisdiction and includes Indian children or adults as participants or programs that may benefit Indian children or adults, including any program established under Title VII, Part A of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act, and conduct discussions on the development of the report to Congress that should be submitted no later than June 30, 2014.

NACIE Report to Congress

The National Advisory Council on Indian Education (the Council) will be convening a teleconference meeting on their scheduled report to Congress. The Council submits to the Congress, not later than June 30 of each year, a report on the activities of the Council that includes recommendations the Council considers appropriate for the improvement of Federal education programs that include Indian children or adults as participants or that may benefit Indian children or adults, and recommendations concerning the funding of any such program. One of the Council's responsibilities is to develop and provide recommendations to the Secretary of Education on the funding and administration (including the development of regulations, and administrative policies and practices) of any program over which the Secretary has jurisdiction. The Council is convening this 2 hour meeting to conduct the following business: 1) Final discussion, review and approval of the annual report to Congress; 2) follow-up on recommendations submitted to the Secretary of Education concerning the funding and administration of programs; and, 3) decide on the possible dates for the next open public meeting(s) for the NACIE.
